Coffee and Culture: Surf History

Coffee and Culture: Surf History In-Person

Join us for our monthly Coffee and Culture program at our Main Street Branch Library.  This monthly event will feature various historical or cultural speakers on topics related to Huntington Beach, Orange County, and Southern California.

Our October, and final 2022, conversation invites you to come learn about the exciting history of surfing in Huntington Beach with local author and expert Mark Zambrano.

Enjoy a look back at the early history of surfing in Huntington Beach, from its first surfers, shapers, clubs and contests. We'll see the roles George Freeth and Duke Kahanamoku played in introducing surfing to HB, meet the first group of surf groms to take over the pier, try to solve the mysterious death of HB's original surf shop, and see how a local dog inspired the first ever surf club. Through historic photos and recorded first hand accounts, this evening will showcase how these conditions and more created the ground swell for what would become one of the most famous surf towns in the world.

We hope you'll join us for this presentation. Enjoy a cup of coffee while you listen and learn more about Huntington Beach's fascinating past.

*Doors will open at 5:30pm, program will begin promptly at 6:00pm.
