TeenSpace Takeover: Humans Vs. Zombies

TeenSpace Takeover: Humans Vs. Zombies In-Person

After the library closes on July 23rd, the teens are taking over! All teens ages 12 - 18 are invited to join the Central Library TeenSpace for a game of tag with a zombie survival twist: a cure for the viral zombie outbreak spreading through HB is hidden in the library, and it's up to you, the plucky last teens standing, to brave the zombie horde and find it! But be careful - get tagged by a zombie and you'll find yourself joining the zombies instead. Are you up to the challenge?

Whether you wound up as a zombie or survived as a human, pizza will be served when the game ends so no one goes home hungry! Please make sure to note any food allergies or restrictions in the spaces provided during registration.

Registered players must check in at the Summer Reading table before 4:45pm to receive a wristband marking them as a player. The library closes at 5pm and the front doors will be locked. Late players will not be permitted entry. All players must have a signed parental waiver to participate.

What is Humans vs. Zombies?

Humans vs. Zombies is a game of tag played at schools, camps, neighborhoods, libraries, and conventions around the world!

Human players must remain vigilant and defend themselves with Nerf dart blasters and balled-up socks (or in our case, faux snowballs!) to avoid being tagged by a growing zombie horde. The game can be played over a long span of time, like a full week, or a shorter span of time, like a single weekend. For the purposes of our game, we'll be playing for just two hours in one evening, and challenging our human players to search the library and find a hidden "cure" for the viral zombie outbreak to stop the horde before time runs out!

Event FAQ

Have a question that wasn't answered below? Email Christany, the Teen Librarian!

Q: Can I bring my own Nerf blaster?

Yes you may! Please indicate in the registration form below that you have a Nerf blaster you will be bringing with you. Blasters will be checked for safety before the game, and tagged with their owner's name. If you bring your own blaster, you'll get to start the game with an extra life as a bonus! Blasters and darts must follow the restrictions below:

  • No realistic-looking weaponry. Blasters must be unmodified, brightly colored and have blaze-orange tips so they may be identified as Nerf blasters at a distance.
  • Blasters and darts must be unmodified, and must not hurt on impact. It should be obvious that your blaster won't hurt anyone!
  • No motorized blasters. Only hand-powered, spring-loaded blasters are permitted.
  • No blasters which fire "Rival" ammo. Blasters must fire foam darts.
  • No mega blasters or mega darts.
  • No velcro-tipped darts.

This list is subject to change. Please check the event page for any updates to the blaster / dart restrictions before bringing in your Nerf supplies on the day of the event!

Q: Will blasters and darts be provided if we can't bring any?

Yes! We will have a limited number of blasters with darts available for human players, and buckets of plush snowballs scattered throughout the play zone. So if you don't own a Nerf blaster, don't despair - you can still participate and have a blast anyway!

Q: Will we really be locked in the library?

Yup. The library closes on Saturday nights at 5:00pm, which is the starting time for our event. All players have to be in the library and checked in by 4:45pm. Once the library closes, the front doors are locked, and players will not be allowed to leave the library until 7:00pm when the event ends, barring an emergency with a parent / legal guardian present to pick you up. Security and library staff will do a head-count of players before the event, and a headcount at the end of the event before we all head home. All players should arrange to be picked up by parents / guardians by 8:00 pm.

Q: Can I drive myself home after the lock-in ends?

As long as you check the appropriate box on your signed parental waiver, then yes, you may! We want to make sure everyone gets home safe, and we know how each player plans to leave the library after the lock-in ends. :)
